Bay of Bengal

The Bay of Bengal, formerly known as “Kalinga Sagar” is the largest bay in the world that forms the northeastern part of the Indian Ocean. It’s roughly triangular in shape & mostly bordered by India and Sri Lanka to the west, Bangladesh to the north and Myanmar & Andaman and Nicobar Island to the east.

 

It occupies an area of almost 2,172,000 square kilometers where a large number of rivers like Ganges, Padma, Hooghly & Brahmaputra and its distributaries like Jamuna, Meghna, Godavari, Mahanadi, Krishna and Kaveri flow into the Bay of Bengal.

 

There are several islands in Bay of Bengal including Andaman Islands, Nicobar and Mergui. The Andaman Islands & Nicobar Islands are part of the union territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India where most of the islands belong to India and small number of islands belongs to Myanmar. But Myanmar got some islands from Bay of Bengal like Cheduba & group of Islands which are significant for a chain of mud volcanoes [Occasionally Active]. Sandwip, Maheshkhali, Dholaghata, Kutubdia, St. Martin’s, Chera Dip, Nijhum Dwip, Hatia, Dublar Char, Char Kukri Mukri are the main Bay of Bengal islands belong to Bangladesh.

 

Besides that some of the biggest ports of the world – Chittagong [Bangladesh] & Chennai [India] are based on the Bay of Bengal where Cuddalore, Ennore, Karaikal, Pondicherry, Tuticorin, Kakinada, Machilipatnam, Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram, Krishnapatnam, Paradip, Kolkata, Mongla and Yangon ports are contributing to the belonging countries economy.

 

The longest unbroken Sea beach, Cox’s Bazar is located in Bangladesh along with Kuakata, Patenga, St. Martin’s Island Sea beach. Myanmar & Sri Lanka both got one sea beach and India is blessed with eight Sea beaches from the Bay of Bengal.

 

The largest mangrove forest in the World or the home of Royal Bengal tiger, Sundarbans is the most desired tourist destination of the world that located on the coastal area of Bay of Bengal.

 

Bay of Bengal also offers to the sea lovers another exciting place called “Swatch of no Ground” [SONG], an underwater canyon located 45 kilometers south of Sundarbans in Bangladesh that recognized as the largest submarine fan in the world & an amazing productive place that supports 4 species of Dolphin & 2 species of Whales.
