The name Birthplace of Bangladesh: Meherpur is indicating the importance of this place to people of Bangladesh. On April 17, 1971, the proclamation of independence was read at village Mujibnagar. On this day the first provisional government of Bangladesh took oath here. At that time, the place was known as Baidyanathtola. The place has now become a beautiful site to visit.
